As the 2020 election and ongoing protests bring political tension in the U.S. to new heights, this session will offer practical safety and trauma advice for journalists on the ground in potentially hostile environments. The workshop will include three “mini sessions,” covering the before, during and after of reporting from political rallies, protests and more.
The first portion will address considerations for editors assigning journalists to cover these events, and will be led by Eliot Stempf, head of high risk at Buzzfeed. Next, we'll focus on situational awareness tips for journos covering these events on the ground, led by Ali Baskerville from ROAAAR. Lastly, Dr. Emily Sachs will discuss trauma and offer tips for journalists and editors on how to take care of themselves and their teams after covering these events. Hannah Allam, IWMF board member and NPR correspondent, will moderate the session.
This event is supported by International Women’s Media Foundation.
