Emily Sachs, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and professor at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. Her clinical and research activities have focused largely on war and refugee trauma and resilience, both in the U.S. and abroad. In each of these contexts Dr. Sachs encountered journalists working to bring attention to human rights and environmental issues, and developed a deep respect for these professionals. She earned her Ph.D. at Fordham University with a dissertation on traumatized asylum seekers, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Subsequently, as a Staff Psychologist at the VA, Dr. Sachs trained other medical professionals to treat PTSD, chronic pain, and substance abuse and presented at national conferences. Currently Dr. Sachs teaches psychology doctoral students, consults to medical and social service agencies, and maintains a private practice. Her evidence-based approach to resilience training includes neurophysiology education, mindfulness techniques, and balancing healthy acceptance with values-directed action. Recognizing the high level of trauma exposure in modern journalism, Dr. Sachs provides training and consultation to news outlets and journalist support organizations, and participates in interagency efforts to increase journalists’ access to quality mental health care.
