How effective were attempts by media, foundations and educators to preserve newsroom internships for students at the height of the pandemic.
Several news organizations canceled internships for summer 2020, a peak time for students to gain work experience, earn money and make critical connections to launch their careers. Others forged ahead with remote internships that challenge newsroom practices and approaches. Some shipped computers with propriety software to remote interns in their homes. Others deferred internships by months and even a year. Technical logistics and digital disparities had to be overcome. This session looks at what worked, what didn’t and what needed improvement in an attempt to help prepare for the next national or regional disaster that will disrupt the media labor supply chain.
