The attacks on the press by Bolsonaro’s government in Brazil and government’s misinformation strategy as a deliberate political strategy
Since President Bolsonaro took office in Brazil, in 2019, the press has been the target of systematic attacks, in a strategy of defamation and weakening of the independent work of the media. At the same time, fact-checking professionals have been faced with a huge amount of misinformation and decontextualized information, which are spread as part of a deliberate strategy to manipulate and guide public debate. In this panel, Marcelo Trässel, President of Abraji, the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism, Gilberto Scofield Jr, Director of Strategy and Business at Agência Lupa, Brazil’s first fact-checking agency, and Pablo Ortellado, professor of Public Policy Management at USP and coordinator of the Political Debate Monitor in the Digital Environment, will discuss the main challenges that journalists and fact- checkers are facing in the current Brazilian context. This panel will be valuable to all audiences, but especially for politics editors and journalists.
